Tonight...I am feeling alone. I just think I won't find anyone who will love me enough to be with me forever. To take a risk forever. TO LOVE ME SO MUCH THAT THEY WILL DO WHAT IS NECESSARY TO BE WITH ME. I was thinking of the movie---FAMILY MAN. Family Man talks a great and magical change of Jack’s life, and through this change, he found what he missed, what was more important for him.
At the airport, Jack was leaving for London for a new better job, but her girlfriend Kate (by Tea Leoni) did not wanna him leave. But Jacky insisted.
K: I have no idea about what the life would like to be, but I know both of us are inside.
K: The plan doesn’t make sense great. We have together. That makes sense great.
Later on, he did become a famous & talented business man, the President of a company, a credible capitalist. He showed great confidence, talented, and composed in his business. He thought he got everything he needed.
J: “Everybody need sth”, “I got everything I need”
But that sentence brought him a great change magically like a disaster to him. At a Christmas night, when he woke up again, he found he was not the President any more, but just a tires salesman, and he has a wife, 2 children in New Jersey. He doesn’t have a Ferrari but just an old mini-Van. He even cannot buy a Zegna suite that he likes very much. He is just an ordinary person, a family man. He was shocked by the unbelievable change, and was angry with the unfair change. The angel told him
“You just remember, you did it. You brought it on yourself.”
“Do not screw out the best thing in your life just because you are a little unsure who you are”
Therefore, actually Nicolas Cage played 2 different characters in this movie. He did it well. You can see Nicolas’s super performance and skill in showing the different expressions of Jack upon the great change, the shock, the anger, the confusion. Nicolas is one of my favourite actors. I saw another movie by him, Wild at heart. But this one gave me more deep impressions.
After a while, he learnt to send the kids to the daycare (do you need a receiver or sth?), play with kids, walk the dog, take the garbage, make coffee, and even he can make the milk for kids without his eyes open. He became a good family man. He became to love his wife and the kids. He can enjoy the happiness of the family life, even though her daughter played the violin badly like noise. Kate and his kids love him as well.
In their anniversary, Jacky forgot (actually should be- do not know) that date.
K: Actually you forgot our anniversary.
J: I’ll fix it. I will get sth. I will make it right.
J: I used to be confident.
K: What are you sure about
J: I am sure right now, there is no elsewhere rather be with you.
My favorite scene is when Jack has been offered a job in the city with a hefty bonus package and a posh apartment, but it would mean moving his family to New York from their home and life in Jersey. his wife, Kate, disagrees with the decision, but has this to say. If they have to make a choice,
Kate says:
"When you got on that plane, I was sure it was over. I left the airport afraid I'd never see you again. And then you showed up the very next day. That was a good surprise. You know, I think about the decision you made... maybe I was being naive, but I believed that we would grow old together in this house. That we'd spend holidays here and have our grandchildren come visit us here. I had this image of us, all grey and wrinkly, and me working in the garden and you re-painting the deck. But things change. If you need this, Jack, if you really need this, I will take these kids from a life they love and I'll take myself from the only home we've ever shared together and I'll move wherever you need to go. I'll do that because I love you. I love you, and that's more important to me than our address. I choose us."
From that day on, he got back his confidence again. Though his life changed, but his talent never changed.
One day, when he heard the bell ring, and saw that angel, he knew that he would go back his original life. But he has begun to love this life. He do not want to go back (I am not going back. Did you hear me?). However he knows, nothing can stop it. So at the night before he went back, he went to say goodbye to the kids he love, and told her daughter who was sleeping that “Take care, Annie. I am going back to the mothership” because her daughter thought he was an alien from another planet. When he went to say goodbye to her lovely wife, he asked her to promise. Since he cannot tell her that he is leaving, what he said make Kate feel weird.
J: I need you to remember me, Kate. I need you put that information at heart and keep there. Keep with you no matter what happens. Pls just promise me.
K: I promise
J: promise me again.
K: I promise. Come to the bed.
J: soon.
That night, he tried to keep him awake all the time because he knew if he fell sleep, once he got up, he would change back to his original life and he cannot see his lovely wife Kate and his kids any more. But still, he fell into sleep.
When he woke up, he found his life was back now. But now he understand that he needs something too. He knows what is missing in his life, the love, the family. It turns out that money is good to have but that is not everything. Then he went to look for his ex-girlfriend, Kate, who was leaving for Paris. Jack asked Kate not leave at that night since it was Xmas. At the beginning of the movie, there is scene at the airport, where Kate asked Kacky not to leave. At the end of the movie, there is another airport scene too. But this time, it is Jack who asked Kate to stay.
J: Do not get on that plane. Let us go have a cup of coffee. That is all I am asking for.
K: I was heart-broken, Jack. But I got it over. I move on. And you should move on too. I am sorry I cannot. I’ve got to go.
At the point, Jack made a wonderful speech which made Kate to stay and resume their love.
J: We have a house in New Jersey. We have 2 kids, Annie and Josh. Anny is not much of violent player, but tries real hard. … Josh, he has eyes. He doesn’t say much, but we know he is smart. He’s always got his eyes open. You know, he’s watching us. Sometime, you just look at him. You know he is learning something new. The house is a mess, but it is ours. You, you are a non-profit lawyer. You are completely non-profit, but it doesn’t seem to bother you. We are in love. After 13-year’s marriage, we are still unbelievably in love. …We made a lot of sacrifice, but we still stay together. You see, you are a better person than I am. You made me a better person around you. I do not know. Maybe it was a dream. Maybe I went to bed once and I imaged all, but I swear, nothing is far from real. If you get on that plane right now, I’ll disappear forever. I know we both will be fine, but I have seen that we can build up together and I choose us. Pls Kate, one cup of coffee. You can always go to Paris, but not tonight.
