POETRY: YOU TOUCHED ME LAST NIGHT

Oh, kiss
You are lingering
Like the perfume of blossoms
On a summer evening
Lips so soft
And so sweet
Journey's end
When lovers meet
Pretty gleaming
Of eyes and smile
Senses reeling
All the while
Love is told
With a kiss
But none so great
Such as this

PART II

Does the wind need to blow
for its existence to show?
so is my love for you...
Silent, but all aglow.

Do we need to see the stars every night
to prove that they are still there?
So is my love for you...
Invisible, yet all bare.

Do we need to check whether the trees are green
or the sky still blue?
So is my love for you...
Colourful, just out of view.

Do we need to breathe
to confirm if we aren't in the grave?
So is my love for you...
Free to go, yet your slave.

Do we need to count the days
to know the existence of time?
So is my love for you...
Timeless, yet my misfortune,
for you... worth less than a dime

PART III

you touched me last night
and i felt it deep within,
as my heart skipped a beat,
my thoughts wandered thin.

till there was only you
; as far as i could see,
your blue eyes looking into mine,
it's where i wanted to be.

you touched me last night
not with your hand or your soft lips,
you touched me with your heart,
far better than any kiss

PART III

Sometimes at night you close your eyes and?
You dream of places far away.
You dream of goals unachieved.

Sometimes at night you close your eyes and...
You imagine things yet to be discovered.
You imagine flying through outer space.

Sometimes at night you close your eyes and...
You see yourself as a child again.
You see the time you?ve let pass you by.

Sometimes at night you close your eyes and...
You wish you could be on top of the world.
You wish you could sleep.

Sometimes at night I close my eyes and...
I dream of being wrapped up in your arms.
I imagine feeling your lips against mine.
I see you looking at me from across the room.
I wish you were lying here with me.

Sometimes at night I close my eyes and see only you.

PART VI

When we're alone, my love, just you and I -
As when we first played court in darkened lanes,

We talked together of each other's lives
And deeply gazed into those love filled eyes.

For now we've been together silver years,
The lines have deepened with the tolls of time,

Yet, I know that you'll be ever mine
Through times of happiness and times of tears.

Our fledglings now have flown our nest;
The time is ours to fill just as we feel ?

As once gain we find our lives alone,
Renew the deepest feelings not yet lost.

Make love to me with skillful, practiced zeal,
Then say to me, "My love is yours to own."

I asked 12 men over 60 what they miss most about their 40s and not one of them said their career, their body, or their social life — every single one described a moment so specific and so small that I had to pull over to write them down by Tommy Baker
